It's hard to estimate. I
It's hard to estimate. I buy a brush and ink every couple of months, and each time they have different brush lines and prices to go with them. And I still haven't found the perfect ink. As for paper, I bought a couple of blocks a while ago that were reduced because they'd turned yellow around the edges. The next batch will be both more expensive and different paper, because it wasn't that good after all.
An advertising company I'm doing one of my webcomics for paid for additional paper, my software, my computer and some other stuff, so it's not much of an investment for me. And I have no idea how much it was.
As for time, that depends on how sophisticated the style is supposed to be. I can get a decent page done within a day, but usually I'm so wasted afterwards that it amounts to a page or two a week. And then there's all the unrelated work. Writing's pretty easy, though. I've even considered moving on to just writing, but I enjoy drawing too much.
It's cheaper than all my other hobbies
1) Free hosting at Comic Genesis
2) markers: 10 bucks or so
3) watercolors: I use left overs from my college classes...so kinda free for this project. I spent 60 dollars on them at the time, buying Winsor Newton and da Vinci brand.
4) paper-- I uses Arches brand watercolor paper-- about 30 bucks a block.
5) scanner and computer...the usual expense everyone else has
6) Corel 8. Free gift.
7) Advertising on Project Wonderful...about 20 bucks a month.
How long does it take? I draw all my pages on my lunch breaks at work. When I have a weeks worth (5-- I do every weekday) I ink them while watching the news at night. On Sundays I assembly line paint them, then scan them and text them. The whole comic takes less than 15 hours a week.
The script --that's a whole 'nuther ball game. I wrote my story as a romance novel over a year ago and I currently have it submitted to several publishers (here's hoping). In the mean time, I decided it would be fun to turn it into a webcomic. There isnt much work to do now, but when I was writing it...I spent 3 months at it.
