They say television is the worst thing going. We're turning into a future of generations of men (and women) who'll be sat behind a screen doing nothing. Television never inspires anyone they say (and they are usually right), but this time they're wrong. Television is a genius box, a box of wonderful ideas. Without a television just think where webcomics would be.
Without television just think of no Doctor Who References. Without Lost we'd definately be Lost. Without Television they'd be no adverts but adverts are priceless!
Then without movies, we'd never have the good old Jurassic Park references. We wouldn't comment about the whole Harry Potter series (sure its a book but who reads books nowadays, hehe). Of course we wouldn't have any film related webcomics out there.
So, without idiot boxes, without the ideas, without anything, with just sunshine, webcomics would definately have a limit resource. So if you're an artist, suck for an idea, watch some TV, go to the flicks and have a good time!
Thanks for this week folks! See you around! Don't forget to check out Webcomics in Print and do what you do best - draw!

I love Lost.

I do a little thing with my friends, where I tell them to go through two exercises with me. First, I ask them to write down everything that is most important to them in life (family, friends, health, faith, Twix bars, whatever), and also what their goals are in life (retire at 55, start a successful business, eat an entire VW Beetle, etc.). Then, I have them carefully monitor how they spend their time in an average day. When both lists are made, we compare the two, and see how well the things they SAY are absolutely most important to them mesh with how they are spending their time. Usually they aren't very well in synch, and usually the easiest and biggest chunk of time to carve out and put towards better use is time spent absent-mindedly watching television.
I don't mean to say that spending five hours watching TV every day is inherently bad. If watching a ton of TV is on your list of the most important things to accomplish in life, great. If it isn't though, then being more aware of your television watching time and limiting yourself to specific shows, and turning the TV off when they aren't on, is probably a good thing. What could YOU do with an extra 20-40 hours every week?
I know if I hadn't taken control of my TV viewing years ago, I would have never been able to get my degree, support a family, work full time, and be involved with webcomics successfully. That being said, I'm sure looking forward to Hell's Kitchen tomorrow night. I prefer the time I do watch TV to be filled with fascinating human psychology experiments like that.
Well said. I don't watch TV
Well said. I don't watch TV at all anymore, except for TV programs on DVD (watching The Prisoner at the moment. Damned good stuff, though ancient.)
References and other in-jokes are very popular in webcomics, but are they really that funny? I think it's a lot more impressive if you can be funny without relying on that "ha ha, I know what he's talking about" feeling.Â
TV is a waste of time. Turn it off.Â
