"Session limit exceeded" alerts

timtylor's picture

Several times in the last few days I've been sent to a "Session Limit Exceeded" page when visiting Comixpedia. There's a "Select a session to disconnect" message, and a form with radio buttons giving a choice of two sessions to disconnect from. I haven't run into this before.

Re: "Session limit exceeded" alerts

In light of the issues, I've turned the sessions limit module off for now.

On second thought, let's not go to Comixpedia. It is a silly place.

Xaviar Xerexes Oh yeah... this place is called ComixTalk now.

Wow - this is really annoying! So ... when we get this alert how do we log back in? At present, no matter what I do, it just keeps taking me back to the error page.

Re: "Session limit exceeded" alerts

I was getting this every time I visited for a while, although it didn't happen just now. Based on experience from my own login-type sites, I doubt many people explicitly log out unless they are visiting from somewhere temporary like an internet cafe (and even then not) and I'm to be honest I'm dubious about whether or not the entire community can be trained to do so.

Suggestion: why can't the same code that spots the existence of the previous session run before the code that starts the new session and then not do so if the two would be identical other than timestamp. This avoids every new session being a dupe of the previous one; you can then have special messages pop up saying 'You are now logging on from a different computer than last time', so users can click on the button that says 'I know'.

Re: "Session limit exceeded" alerts

I admit I rarely log off when I'm at home, except for banking and other sites where my money's involved. By now I have so many different passwords for different forums and suchlike that it's a headache having to dig them out to sign on every time I want to comment.

I think the "Session limit exceeded" page at least needs to have a friendly note of explanation on it. Otherwise, it just comes across as a mysterious error-message that non-geeks will translate as "Broken Website". I was hesitant to use the buttons at first in case I'd somehow got onto an administrator's page and was about to shut the site down.

Re: "Session limit exceeded" alerts

That's a good idea.

On a related note I've also added some redirects so everyone is funnelled to comixtalk.com now regardless of what legacy URL they are typing in.

Re: "Session limit exceeded" alerts

I have been experimenting with keeping each account to one session - it's both a security measure and it helps give me a better handle on who's visiting.

You got the messge b/c you didn't log out of previous sessions. At least that's the idea. I'm still testing it...
