In issue #275 of The Comics Journal, Shaenon Garrity (Narbonic) considers The Best Comics of 2005 along with Dirk Deppey, Evan Dorkin, Craig Thompson and others.
Eric Millikin (Fetus-X) reports on the Danish Muhammad cartoon controversy along with Michael Dean, R.C. Harvey, Houria Kerdioui and Dirk Deppey. The Comics Journal has posted an online excerpt of Cartoons of Mass Destruction: The Whole Story Behind the Danish 12.
The issue also features reviews of comics such as Acme Novelty Library #16 and Top 10: The Forty-Niners, an interview with David B., and another installment of Kenneth Smith's wildly popular Time Out of Joint.

Re: SHOCKING!
I'm glad to hear you're pumped up about this djcoffman! I have no idea what Shaenon's picks for Best Comics of 2005 are, but I'm with you. She never fails to surprise with the depth of her comics knowledge, and she's sure to have some unkown and/or under-rated gems on her list that will pleasantly shock us all. And I haven't seen the final version of Cartoons of Mass Destruction: The Whole Story Behind the Danish 12 either, but if it's anything like the last edit I saw then there's definitely plenty of never-seen-before exclusive commentary from artists, academics, and others from all sides of the issue; some of which is unique enough that, yes, the most faint-hearted amongst us may find that it rises to the level of "shocking."
Also, I believe you'll find all twelve of the controversial cartoons reprinted in The Journal, so if you follow certain fundamentalist Islamic teachings you may find those shocking as well. Let me know if this issue lives up to your shock-threshold-shattering expectations when you read it.

Re: SHOCK AND AWE-SOME! AND RAGE!
Apparently there are also, in some people's opinions, some shocking omissions from the Best Comics of 2005 series. For example, rumor has it that Spaniel Rage by Vanessa Davis didn't make anybody's list, causing much rage itself in certain corners of comics readership. Thankfully, I have heard no reports that ojingogo made anybody's list, so at least we're safe from that ... for now.

BEST COMICS OF 2005!
BEST COMICS OF 2005!
Re: [Shaenon Garrity's] BEST COMICS OF 2005!
Yeah, I can't wait for this either. I read tons of great comics every year, but there are always some amazing comics that manage to slip under my radar until someone else points them out to me. Thankfully The Journal attracts some of the most thoughtful and well-read people to break down the global comics scene for us. Shaenon, for example, stays much more on top of the latest non-horror manga releases than I do. So, after we get this issue, we can pretty much just take TCJ's best of lists and turn them into our shopping list for great comics we missed out on!

... some things are better
... some things are better than others? Everyone isn't equally as good at cartooning as everyone else? People are expressing their opinions -- in a publication dedicated to publishing those opinions, for readers who are interested in hearing those opinions -- about what they think is best? It's a scandal, I tells ya! A scandal! Call the Webcomics Thought Police immediately!

I assure you, Mr. Manley...
You don't call the thought police.
They call upon you.
