The Create a Comic Project (CCP) is a youth literacy activity that uses comics to teach creative writing. It began in the summer of 2005 as a classroom activity when I was teaching English overseas. After moving back to America to start graduate school, I noticed that in the area where I was living there were a lot of disadvantaged youth whose schools couldn't afford good extracurricular activities. To help give back to the community, I re-structured the Create a Comic Project into an afterschool program based in the main branch of the local library.
The first CCP session in America was November 29, 2006. Since then, it has attracted sponsors including Yale University, the New Haven Public Library, the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven, the University of Pittsburgh, and the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh. In the comic community, it has found support from creators like Kazu Kibuishi, T. Campbell, Shaenon Garrity, Phil Foglio, and many others. The project continues to this day, bringing comics to children of diverse backgrounds.
