Long-time cartoonist Corie Marie Kitley announced on October 1st that she deleted the archives of her two most recent webcomics, Life's So Rad and Common Grounds and was giving up on webcomics. Within the smaller "public sphere" of the webcomics community, Kitley has lived a fairly visible life by putting a great deal of autobiographical material into her webcomics and in posts to her website and livejournal.
Although it's not clear if Kitley has any intention to continue work on comics in other formats, she and her fiancée Tod Parkhill remain involved in Young American Comics, a small press comics publisher.
There's a big difference between not posting new strips and purposefully taking down your archives. I haven't posted a new Dedos comic in years now, but would you have considered me to have said "goodbye"?
There's been a lot of comickers announcing their "retirements" in the past (I've done it a couple of times myself). Either on certain projects or from the medium itself. Some time passes, heads cool down, life situations clear up, the desire to upload new material returns, and then we hear the "I'm back!" announcement. Roadwaffles, Elf-Life, Giselle Legace.. Steve Troop's Melonpool is a recent example. Heck, even the infamous Movie-Comics.com announced its possible return recently. Simply put, nothing's really written in stone in the online comic world. Gotta take these bye-bye announcements with a fairly large grain of salt nowadays :)

Sure, now that the next season of "The Simpsons" is about to start, they'll have their writers back.
